What are the types of waterproofing

Baunetz_Knowledge

For a permanently tight and functional flat roof, the choice of a suitable seal is of crucial importance. With the multitude of materials available, this is not an easy undertaking, because as numerous as the possibilities of flat roof construction are, so is the choice of roof seals.

The safest sealing variant must be determined individually for each roof area. Only products that comply with the building regulations list or general building inspectorate test certificates may be used. In addition, the seals must comply with the product data sheets in the rules of the roofing trade. The compatibility of the materials or the sheets with one another must also be ensured. The following materials, among others, are suitable as roof waterproofing:

Bitumen sheeting with a carrier insert and top layer

  • Polymer bitumen, modified with thermoplastic elastomers (PYE)
  • Polymer bitumen, modified with thermoplastics (PYP)
Plastic sheets
  • Polyolefin alloys (FPO / TPO)
  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC-P)
  • Ethylene copolymer bitumen (ECB)
  • Polyisobutylene (PIB)
  • Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (VAE / EVA)
  • chlorinated polyethylene (PEC)
Elastomer sheets (synthetic rubber)
  • Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomers (EPDM)
  • chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM)
  • Nitrile rubber (NBR)
  • Butyl rubber (IIR)
But regardless of whether it is plastic, rubber or bitumen: the demands on waterproofing are high and the same for all roofing membranes. They have to be straight and flat, resistant to shock loads and hailstorms, root-proof and hydrolysis-resistant. And these are just some of the requirements that waterproofing must meet.
