Tips for effective gutter protection

Anyone who deals with the topic of gutter protection and gutter cleaning quickly loses patience. There are different solutions, shapes and sizes. This is mainly due to the fact that both roofs and gutters differ in their properties. In addition, the pollution also depends on the slope of the gutter. If the water is rinsed through it regularly, less dirt will stick. The requirements for the protection of the rain gutter vary depending on the extent of leaf fall and pollen count on site. You should ask yourself these questions when choosing the right gutter protection:

These experts will be happy to advise you:

What kind of roof do you have?

With a pitched roof over 50 degrees, the tiles usually protrude into the gutter, so that semicircular protective grilles that curve upwards are out of the question. The leaf lattices must therefore be attached flat under the roof tiles. Since the catchment runs below the upper edge of the gutter in this variant too, branches and leaves can easily get caught. Only a very precise attachment of the leaf protection can prevent this.

What type of gutter is it?

If you want to protect a semicircular gutter, you are on the safe side. This shape enables the flexible attachment of either semicircular grids, nets or channel caterpillars. For box gutters, semicircular grids and channel caterpillars are out of the question.

Tip: In the case of gutters with an eaves gutter, this covers the rear edge of the gutter. Some models for gutter protection are then out of the question due to the limited attachment options. Pay attention to the manufacturer's information, customer reviews or ask the manufacturer.

How big is the gutter?

There are different standard sizes for gutters, which are decisive for the choice of an efficient leaf stop. The sizes of garden houses can deviate from the norm. So pay particular attention to a suitable gutter protection.

Tip: If an eaves sheet is attached, the width is reduced a by about an inch.

What material is the gutter made of?

If you have a gutter made of plastic, you don't need to worry about the material compatibility of the gutter protection. Cladding made of high-density polyethylene (PE-HD) is particularly popular. In the case of metal or stainless steel materials, on the other hand, it is advisable to adapt the material of the leaf catcher strip to the material of the gutter. The reason for this is that certain materials are incompatible with each other. Examples are iron in combination with copper, as well as copper with zinc.

What shape and size do the holes need to be to avoid clogging?

The holes in the gutter protection must not be too small, otherwise leaf particles and mud will easily close the system. Understandably, the hole size must not be too wide so that leaves, seeds and needles stay outside. In the test, leaf protection strips with a hole diameter of 6 millimeters have proven to be effective. In terms of shape, hexagonal holes in particular achieved the best results in the test.

Tip: If you want to protect your gutter not only from leaves, but also from bird nests and martens, gutter brushes or caterpillars have proven to be particularly effective.

Gutter protective grille in the test

In the test, solid grids made of metal or plastic prove to be the best form of gutter protection against clogging of the drain by leaves. The grilles are firmly installed, so it is important to attach them precisely, which closes well on both sides of the gutter. Gutter protection grilles are available in half-round and flat shapes, so that there is a suitable model for every type of roof and gutter size.

Best protection against leaves and birds: Gutter brushes tested

If you are looking for a gutter protection that works not only against leaves, but also against birds, nests and martens, you can use a simple gutter brush (also known as a gutter caterpillar). It is simply put in the gutter. However, protection against seeds and needles is not optimal here. In addition, the brush itself has to be freed from leaves in between to ensure drainage.

The correct diameter of the gutter caterpillar is crucial: Too big and the brush pushes itself out of the gutter, too small and it is carried away by the wind. Therefore, pay attention to the manufacturer's information. Although the brush is made of plastic and is compatible with all gutter materials, you should pay attention to the material of the wire. Again, it should be compatible with your gutter so that it is not attacked.

Inexpensive protection against leaves: gutter nets put to the test

The cheapest form of leaf protection is the plastic net with click technology. Make sure it is of good quality so that the construction remains stable over a long period of time. The gutter net is flexibly attached to the gutter with elastic clips, but here, too, as with the gutter grille, precise work is required to avoid "dirt corners" in the gutter. In the test, the installation is therefore more tricky than with the other two variants in the gutter protection comparison.

Inexpensive alternative to the complete gutter cover: leaf strainer, downpipe strainer, leaf grille

It sounds tempting to protect the gutter from clogging with an inexpensive downpipe screen. This is basically an easy solution when you are dealing with little leaf fall. The leaf strainer is inserted into the hanging socket and thus prevents contamination in the downpipe. Of course, the leaf guard does not offer any protection for the gutter itself. The rain gutter must therefore be cleaned as required, just like the leaf strainer itself. In comparison, solutions that extend over the entire gutter are definitely the better alternative.
