Entry into Canada at a glance
Comprehensive travel preparation with knowledge of the entry requirements for Canada allows you a relaxed start to your next vacation. Before you leave, you can double-check that you have the travel documents, if you are traveling with underage children, that you have any additional papers required. For example, when traveling with animals, you will need to provide evidence of your dog's age and vaccinations. Identify yourself at the border authorities and provide information about the goods you have brought with you. After that, nothing stands in the way of your Canada vacation in untouched nature and exciting cities.
What documents do I need to enter Canada?
You need one to enter Canada valid passport. On the website of the Canadian government you will find a short questionnaire to determine whether you are in the process of Electronic Travel Authorization, short eTA, can participate or need a visa. Then select your nation from the list of countries and receive detailed information on your entry requirements into Canada. The most important regulations are briefly listed below for you.
Travelers from Germany and most European countries must apply for an eTA online in advance of their trip. For a relaxed travel preparation, you should ideally get this early and before you book your flight. Sometimes there may be waiting times. Each person traveling with you needs their own eTA. For example, a family of four must register all four family members individually.
If the questionnaire shows that you cannot take part in the eTA, you will need a visa to enter Canada. This mainly affects holidaymakers from countries outside Europe. The Canadian representation in your home country is responsible for issuing the certificate. Depending on the individual requirements, you may have to bring additional documents with you in addition to a valid passport.
When applying for a visa, for example, you have to prove that you have enough financial means for your vacation. It may also happen that you will be asked for a medical certificate. When visiting friends or relatives, it is advisable to bring an invitation letter with you. Before the Canadian authorities issue a visa, they also want to make sure that holidaymakers will leave Canada again after their stay. For example, proof of an employment relationship or family in the country of origin could be an advantage.
In general, a visa can be applied for conveniently online or in person. For the exact procedure in your home country, it is best to consult the Canadian representation in your country.
Which travel documents do dual citizens need?
For dual citizens it is important to know that they can only enter the country with their Canadian passport. If you do not have one, you must first apply for one at the embassy. The best thing to do is to find out from the Canadian representation which documents you need to present in your individual case.
Which travel documents do permanent residents need?
Permanent residents enter with their permanent resident card. If this has expired during your stay outside Canada, you will temporarily need permanent resident documents. You can use these to re-enter Canada and obtain a new ID card.
What entry requirements apply to minors?
Children and adolescents under the age of 18 are subject special entry regulations. These vary depending on whether a child is traveling alone or, for example, only with one parent. In addition to a valid passport for the minor, additional documents are therefore required for the trip to Canada. This is to prevent a child from entering the country without their parents' consent.
A minor traveling alone also needs a copy of his / her birth certificate. The legal guardians must write a letter confirming the trip and signing it. This also includes the address and telephone number of the legal guardian and the adult who looks after the minor in Canada.
If the child travels with only one parent, in addition to a copy of the birth certificate, a signed written permission from the absent parent with their address and telephone number must be presented. In addition, a signed copy of this parent's passport or identity card is required. In the case of divorced or separated parents with joint custody, a copy of the court decision on custody is also required.
If one parent has sole custody, you will also need a copy of the custody decision. If the child is traveling with the non-custodian, they must have a letter of approval from their legal guardian. If one of the parents has passed away, you should bring a copy of the death certificate with you.
If an underage child is traveling with their legal guardian or adoptive parents, it is beneficial to provide a copy of the relevant documents as evidence. In the case of children traveling with third parties such as godparents or relatives, a written permission from the legal guardian must be brought with them, as well as a signed copy of the passport or identity card of the legal guardian.
What are the possible reasons for an entry refusal?
A person may be refused entry to Canada for security reasons such as protection from terrorism, criminal record or links to organized crime. The gravity of the act is irrelevant. But that doesn't mean that if you have a criminal record, it would be impossible for you to experience an adventure vacation in Canada. Those affected have the opportunity to apply for rehabilitation.
In rare cases, health reasons can also prevent you from entering Canada. The state wants to guarantee public safety or make sure that it does not have to pay massive costs for a traveler with health problems.
Your entry can also be refused if you have insufficient funds to finance your stay. If it turns out that you have withheld false information or information in order to obtain your visa, for example, you will also be refused entry.
What will I expect when I enter Canada?
Upon arrival in Canada, show a border guard your passport and additional documents if required. Regardless of whether you are entering on an eTA or a visa, you will be asked a few questions. The officer would like to make sure that you are authorized to enter the country and make sure that you leave the country again after your specified length of stay. This conversation will most likely be in English. If French is better for you, this is usually no problem due to Canada's bilingualism.
After that, the date of departure will be stamped on your passport or you will be told how long you can stay in Canada. Usually the duration is six months. You must answer truthfully when asked. You are obliged to indicate all goods you are taking with you, including food, plants and animal products. Also declare the value of the goods you are taking in Canadian dollars.
What general customs regulations apply when entering Canada?
All travelers must fill out a card for declaring goods and foreign currency upon arrival. Up to four people from the same family can fill out a card together. If you arrive by plane, this will be given to you by the flight attendants. It is best to pack a ballpoint pen in your hand luggage so that you can easily fill out the card before arrival. If you are arriving by land, simply follow the signposted route to the relevant counters. There you give an oral declaration of value.
In your preparations, please do not forget the entry requirements for Canada above the upper limit for duty-free products, because anything above this will be expensive. Gifts may not exceed a maximum value of CAN $ 60 per item. Alcoholic beverages per person may not be carried more than 1.5l of wine or 1.14l of spirits or 24 cans of 225ml beer or bottled beer up to a maximum of 8.5l. A traveler can also bring either 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or cigarillos and 200g of loose tobacco.
Which goods are not allowed to be brought into the country?
In order to protect your own fauna and flora from foreign pathogens, there are import bans for certain items and foods. Canada's import regulations prohibit numerous foods and objects such as meat, fruits and vegetables, milk, plants or articles made of wood, and seeds. The import bans vary depending on the country of origin and current pathogens. As a result, the products affected are subject to constant change, so it is advisable to inquire about the products that you plan to take with you before you leave for Canada. There may be waiting times at customs if the soil of your last hike can still be found in the profile of your trekking shoes.
Entering Canada with pets
According to the entry regulations of Canada, pets do not have to be quarantined. However, more detailed investigations can lead to delays in customs formalities. Since the inspection person is not on site around the clock, it is worth registering in advance in the Automated Import Reference System in order to avoid delays. When organizing your trip, you should also ask your airline whether you need additional documents for your pet. You will also discuss the transport with the airline. Under certain conditions it is allowed to import animal feed from the United States of America. From other countries none may be brought across the Canadian border.
Dogs need all age-appropriate vaccinations, so you must provide proof of age. During the inspection, for example, the rabies vaccinations are checked and whether the given description matches the animal. After that, it is visually examined for any signs of disease. If necessary, a veterinarian is called in or further examinations are carried out. A fee is charged for this procedure. If the rabies vaccination regulations are not met, you will need to vaccinate your pet for a certain period of time. For cats, you need a rabies vaccination certificate in English or French, signed by a licensed veterinarian, with a description of the animal, the date of the vaccination, the name and serial number of the vaccine and the duration of the vaccination.
Extending your stay in Canada
When you enter Canada, you will usually receive a permit for a stay of six months. If that's not enough for you, or if you want to take a great tour of the wilderness but it doesn't take place until a little later, you can extend your visa. It is important that you submit the application ideally 30 days before your visa expires.
There are two ways you can apply for an extension. You can do this online provided you have access to a scanner or camera to make digital copies of your documents and a valid credit card. To submit a physical application, download the documents from the Government of Canada website.
While you are waiting for the decision of the immigration authorities to extend your visa, you are in a special status. If there are now delays in processing and your visa expires, you still do not have to leave the country.
